Kathleen Culver joined the School of Journalism & Mass Communication in 1999 to teach the foundation skills course, J202: Mass Communication Practices. Culver brings a blend of professional and academic experience to match the conceptual and practical requirements of the curriculum the J-School launched in fall 2000.
Culver, who earned a Ph.D. in mass communication from the School, most recently served as communications manager in marketing for UW Health-Physicians. With 800 doctors and 1,500 staff, the organization is the largest physician group in the state and among the 10 largest in the nation. Her responsibilities there included development, design and maintenance of an Internet site to market the group and management of print publications.
The switch to marketing followed 10 years of experience as a reporter and writer for newspapers and magazines. Culver emphasizes intensive writing instruction in her classes as a common denominator between news and strategic communication.
During her graduate studies at UW-Madison, Culver taught courses in the news-editorial sequence and served as a teaching assistant in Law of Mass Communication. She also worked as one of the School’s undergraduate advisers for six years.
She is interested in social media, online journalism, interactive marketing and digital media law and ethics.
Culver lives in Madison with her husband, Scott (JBA ‘88), two sons, Pete and Joe, and daughter, Ellie.
