Student Organizations Students have many opportunities to get involved in communications organizations and media outlets on campus. This list is not all-inclusive nor does it imply an endorsement by the J-School, but it does cover the organizations and outlets in which many of our students participate. Ad Club: The Ad Club is open to all UW students interested in advertising and marketing. Meetings provide a behind-the-scenes account of working in or around advertising and feature speakers from a wide range of careers to talk about many facets of advertising. Student reporters, editors, advertising representatives, photographers and graphic designers are accepted at all levels. For more information, visit www.badgerherald.com. Badger Yearbook: Located in 2147 Vilas Hall, the Badger Yearbook has served as an annual collection of pictures and words to remind students, faculty, alumni and Badger fans worldwide of the events and happenings that shaped the academic year. For more information, call (608) 263-6810. Canvas Magazine: Canvas is a student-run literary magazine. Daily Cardinal: The Daily Cardinal is published weekdays and distributed throughout the UW-Madison and surrounding community. Students of all levels may apply to be reporters, copy editors, advertising representatives, graphic designers and photographers. For more information, visit www.dailycardinal.com. Emmie Magazine: Emmie Magazine is published by the music committee of the Wisconsin Union Directorate. Illumination: the Undergraduate Journal of Humanities: Illumination is a 100% undergraduate edited and published journal of humanities. We publish semiannually and welcome submissions of any kind in poetry, prose, art, and essays. We maintain the art exhibit in the Open Book Cafe in College Library, and host several open mics, readings, and other events throughout the year. Madison Observer: The Madison Observer is an independent, student-controlled publication with two main goals: to amplify the voices of those who are often silenced in the corporate media, and to elevate the level of political and cultural discourse on this campus. Mendota Beacon: The Mendota Beacon is a bi-weekly student newspaper that strives to “Shine The Light on What’s Right” at UW-Madison. The paper prides itself on presenting "a different perspective than most Madison media sources." Writers, reporters, and support staff are welcome to join the publication. SPJ: The Society of Professional Journalists offers students the opportunity to network with professionals in print, broadcast and new media and tackle projects related to a free and open press. Women in Comm: Women in Communications is a professional organization that promotes the advancement of women across all communications disciplines. WUD: The Wisconsin Union Directorate works to plan, promote, and produce campus programming.
