How big are most journalism courses?
With the exception of Journalism 201, most J-School courses are small. A few courses are lecture-based and enroll up to 100 students; however, the courses that focus on skills and nearly all graduate offerings typically cap at 15 or fewer students.
Which journalism courses are available to people outside the major?
Journalism 201 and most of the courses numbered 500 and above are available to non-majors who satisfy other requirements or gain consent of the instructor.
Notable exceptions to this are: J681 and J682 (honors thesis); J691 and J692 (senior thesis); J697 (internship); J698 and 699 (directed study); and certain gradable courses.
How do I get consent of instructor for a course?
Contact the listed professor (if no professor is listed, e-mail Janet Buechner), and submit your request. Include your student ID number when emailing, along with any background coursework you have done that would make you qualified for the course.
How do I take a course pass/fail?
Fill out the pass/fail option request form on the registrar’s Web site. PLEASE NOTE: Undergraduate journalism majors are NOT allowed to take journalism courses or other courses that fulfill specific degree requirements (such as the advanced social science requirements) pass/fail.
