Contexts of Expression
The ways in which mediated expression interacts with its social
and cultural contexts both reflects and transforms those contexts. In the
interaction between performance, media, and identity, boundaries are transgressed,
resulting in diasporic identity formation, creation of virtual space, cultural
anxiety, aesthetic hybridity, and new media policy making. (The public performance
of identity is rarely uncontested; thus, countervailing forces such as the
state, the market, and social movements, may constrain or privilege particular
expressive processes and products.)
