UW Dorm Security during Halloween Weekend

While thousands of out-of-town guests are in Madison for Halloween, UW residence halls are doing their part to keep visitors out.
Bradley Learning Community, the only all freshmen dorm on campus, is quiet this year for Halloween, and it’s not just because it’s the farthest dorm from State Street. In all dorms, in order to enter the building, students have to individually be checked in by a housing staff member. Employee Jackie Adams says students are reacting well to new rules.
“They haven’t been surprised, they kind of knew what to expect,” Bradley Program Director Adams said. “A lot of them actually commented on how great it is to see that and how they’re calling their parents and letting their parents know.”
Another employee says new rules for the weekend, like prohibiting out-of-town guests, caused about one fourth of his residents to head home. Other students are either staying in for the night or spending most of the night at their friends’ dorms closer to State Street. One Bradley housefellow says he’s playing down the event to his residents.
“This in a lot of ways isn’t that much different than any normal weekend beyond the fact that it’s a lot less safe, so there’s really not that much of a reason to go out,” housefellow Nick Rego said.
While the rest of Madison seems to be spending their Halloween on State Street, some freshmen choose to stay in the comfort of their own home and play a game of Scrabble.
One freshman playing said, “I don’t want to be a part of it. It’s just asking for trouble.”
So while the rest of Madison parties on State Street, some residents are happy staying in.
