Frequently Asked Questions - Graduate Students

Can you mail me an informational packet and/or application materials?

We've tried to go as "paper-less" as possible, and therefore we do not mail informational packets or application materials to prospective applicants. If you have a specific question that cannot be answered after visiting our website, please contact us.

When is the application deadline?

We will accept applications for Fall 2007 beginning September 1. The deadline is December 1.

When and how will I find out if I am accepted to the program?

Admission decisions are sent via email no later than March 1.

Is financial aid available through the J-school? How do I apply?
The School of Journalism & Mass Communication offers a small number of assistantship positions to incoming students each year. All applicants who are admitted to the school are considered for funding, and no separate application is needed. Because competition is fierce, we suggest that you explore all your options for financing your graduate education. You should start with the Office of Student Financial Services.

What is the average GPA of admitted students?

The average undergraduate GPA was 3.5 for all applicants admitted for Fall 2005. The average graduate GPA was 3.8.

How many people on average apply for the Master's program? How about for the doctoral program?

About 140 students apply each year for the Master’s program, and roughly 40 percent are offered admittance. An average of 60 students apply for the doctoral program, out of which 25 percent are offered admission.

How do I choose my adviser?

An adviser is selected for you for your first semester by matching your interests as listed in your personal statement to our current faculty’s strengths. After your first semester has passed, you select a permanent adviser based on your interactions with our faculty.

How do I change my adviser?

If you would like to change to a new faculty adviser and that person is amenable to the switch, contact the graduate program coordinator to inform her of the change.

How can I find out about research opportunities for grad students?

Your faculty adviser can notify you about research opportunities within the department as well as the University that are appropriate to your interests.

Where do I get forms for my thesis/prelims/dissertation?

Forms are available on the J-School Web site, from the graduate program coordinator in 5115 Vilas or from the graduate adviser, Susan Brandscheid, in 5114 Vilas.
