Admission for Graduate Study

New students are admitted to the Journalism degree program for fall semester only. December 1 is the application deadline for admission to the J-school’s master’s and doctoral programs.

There is no separate application for department funding (teaching, project, or research assistantships). All completed applications are considered for these positions.

A committee of 5 tenure-track faculty members reviews each application.
Admission decisions are based on:
-the quality of an applicant's academic record and standardized test scores
-preparation to pursue an advanced degree
-clearly defined goals and reasons for graduate education in the field
-compatibility of those goals with faculty specializations and areas of expertise

Students are not required to have communication degrees or professional media experience to qualify for admission to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Note: Please contact Corinne Ahrens for application instructions before proceeding if:
--you were previously enrolled as a Graduate student on the UW-Madison campus and are applying for re-entry
OR
--you are currently enrolled in a different Graduate program on the UW-Madison campus
