Find an Intern

UW-Madison journalism students are studying at one of the best journalism programs in the nation and are eager to share their skills in a professional environment. By hiring a J-School intern, you will not only provide a valuable opportunity in a student's career development, but you will also get a skilled contributor to your organization.

Journalism students are allowed to receive academic credit for their internship experiences if they wish. The student is solely responsible for the additional work involved to earn the credit, which they do under the supervision of a J-School faculty member. Students must intern at least 10 hours per week to earn credit.

The first step to finding an intern is to develop an internship description, including the following items:

  • Who you are and what you do
  • The intern’s duties
  • Required skills/experience
  • Preferred skills/experience – especially computer- or equipment-related
  • Number of hours per week required (and within what hours overall, i.e. M-F 8-5)
  • Pay status – many internships are unpaid and still receive many strong candidates; however, if you are able to offer an hourly wage or stipend at the end of the semester, it often attracts more attention
  • Transportation – does your intern need to have a car? Are you located near campus or a bus line?
  • Application materials and method – would you like to see a cover letter, resume, clips, work samples, etc? Can the student apply via email, fax, mail or in person?
  • Application deadline

The J-School is happy to help in the application process, especially if you are not located in the greater Madison area but are still very interested in hiring a J-School intern. We can collect resumes for you and arrange for on-campus interviews for your convenience.

Internship information is distributed in four ways:

On the Web: Current opportunities are posted online until the deadline for applications has passed or for 30 days if no deadline is noted.

Via e-mail: Opportunities are e-mailed to students weekly.

In classes: Internship information is shared with faculty of appropriate courses to announce to their students and encourage applications.

Posted in hard copy: Internship announcements are also posted on the J-School job boards on the 5th floor of Vilas Hall, where many students pass on their way to courses or to meet with faculty.

To post your internship opportunity:

You can email the opportunity as a text message or as a Word or PDF attachment to hschroeder@wisc.edu.

You can fax the information attn: Internship Services at (608) 262-1361
