Harold L. Nelson Award Recipients

1998 Wilmott Ragsdale
  wilmott ragsdaleWilmott Ragsdale, professor emeritus of journalism and mass communication, joined the UW-Madison faculty in 1960 and retired in 1982. By the time he joined the UW faculty, he had been a merchant seaman, a published poet, a journalist and war correspondent who worked for Time, Newsweek and the Wall Street Journal. He earned master’s degrees in philosophy and literature from Johns Hopkins University and he studied at the Sorbonne. He originated courses in specialized reporting, critical writing, and the literary aspects of journalism. In 1978 Ragsdale won a distinguished teaching award. Though he retired, Ragsdale continued to teach at the University of Puget Sound, in Tacoma, Washington, until a few years ago. As a professor, Ragsdale touched many lives, and his students have won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer prize.
