Your Donations Make a Difference: A Personal Story…

If you're considering making a tax-deductible donation to the J-School, you may want to check this page intermittently. We'll offer rotating stories about how donations directly help students, faculty and staff.

“I received a scholarship from the School of Journalism during each of my last two semesters at UW-Madison. They played a very important role in determining how I was to round out my stay here as a student.

“I have always paid for my own education, which is obviously quite a burden these days. As a result, I worked two jobs during my first few years here to cover tuition and expenses. During my first three years as a student, I had absolutely no time or energy for pursuing internships. My focus was squarely upon paying tuition and studying.

“However, once I got the scholarships, I was able to focus less on making ends meet, and more on securing a worthwhile internship within the journalism field. This proved to be a big boost because I nabbed an internship during the Fall 2003 semester at a Web magazine.

“The internship provided me with some invaluable experience, it bolstered my resume considerably, and it should help me get a decent job after I graduate. I couldn't have done it without the J-School scholarship support – it really made a difference.”
