Awards

The School of Journalism & Mass Communication annually recognizes the achievements of graduates who have demonstrated excellence in their fields. We award alumni prizes at our annual Awards Banquet each spring:

The Distinguished Service to Journalism Award

Each year the School honors outstanding alumni with the Distinguished Service to Journalism Award. Faculty nominate and select award winners based on their achievements in all fields of journalism and mass communication.

The Ralph O. Nafziger Award
for Achievement within 10 Years of Graduation

Periodically, the faculty honor a recent graduate for professional accomplishments within 10 years of graduation. The award is named for the late Ralph O. Nafziger, director of the school from 1949 until his retirement in 1966. Nafziger built an international reputation as a leader in journalism education. The honorees have shown remarkable professional initiative and promise.

The Harold L. Nelson Award

The Harold L. Nelson award is given for distinguished contribution to journalism and mass communication education. The award is named for Harold L. Nelson, director of the School of Journalism from 1966 to 1975. Recipients have taught in some of the most distinguished journalism programs in the nation.

The Director’s Award

The Director’s Award was created by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 1993 as a way for the school’s director to honor individuals (who have a connection to the J-School (though not necessarily as alumni) for outstanding contributions to the field of mass communication.
