J697: Internship credit
The School of Journalism permits students working at appropriate internships to earn course credits through Journalism 697. In addition to following the steps below, keep in mind the following:
- The deadlines are:
Summer 2008: May 15, noon
Fall 2008: Oct. 15, noon
Spring 2009: Feb. 20, noon
- IF YOU KNOW YOU HAVE AN INTERNSHIP, PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DEADLINE TO TURN IN THIS FORM
- J697 is only open to current journalism majors. You must be formally accepted into the major before the beginning of the internship in order to receive credit.
- J697 credit will not be granted for work done in/for student organizations or under student supervisors.
- J697 credits are credit/no credit and thus do not count toward the minimum of 30 Journalism credits required for the major. However, they do count toward the maximum of 40 credits you can take within your major and graduate with 120 credits.
- NEW ITEM: J697 is now only available for ONE credit per semester, regardless of the number of hours you work each week. You must, however, intern at least 10 hours per week to be eligible to earn credit.
Steps for registering for J697
- Find an appropriate internship. Students interested in strategic communication and journalism internships can refer to the J-School’s web internship listing or the internship board on the fifth floor of Vilas Hall. Many students find internships on their own by using published guides or internet resources.
- Fill out a J697 registration form. To complete the form, you must obtain a faculty signature. All students registering for J697 must do so through a School of Journalism faculty member (not a teaching assistant). Your faculty contact should be knowledgeable about the field of your internship. S/he will provide more detailed guidelines regarding your obligations for the course.
- Return your signed J697 form to Heather Lee Schroeder. If the internship meets our criteria, your credits will be approved and you will be authorized to register. Erica will email to you the course number to use for web enrollment.
- Keep in contact with your faculty member during the semester. You’re responsible for maintaining contact with your faculty member and submitting your coursework at the appropriate time. If you have questions about deadlines, ask your faculty member directly.
